Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about timecard decimals, FLSA rounding rules, and payroll conversions.
How do you calculate total weekly hours from daily punch times?
Enter your starting time, finishing time, and lunch break for Monday through Sunday. The calculator deducts breaks, totals all daily hours, converts minutes to decimals, and automatically applies 1.5x overtime for hours worked over 40.
When does overtime pay apply in the United States?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per workweek at a rate not less than one and one-half times (1.5x) their regular rate of pay. (Note: California and certain states also require daily overtime after 8 hours).
How are meal breaks deducted on timecards?
Bona fide meal periods (typically 30 minutes or longer) during which an employee is completely relieved from duty are unpaid and must be deducted from the total elapsed hours between clock-in and clock-out.
